1488, The English Archer,
A Living History Show

The fate of Brittany will be played out on July 3, 4, 5, and 6, 2025, at the Château de la Giraudais in Mézières-Sur-Couesnon (35).

On the grounds of the Château de la Giraudais, the actors in our show bring to life a painful chapter in Brittany’s history: five years of war from 1487 to 1491 between the Kingdom of France and the Duchy of Brittany, ending with the first marriage of young Anne of Brittany to King Charles VIII, who annexed Brittany. A second marriage between Anne of Brittany and Louis XII will briefly restore some freedoms to the Duchy…

In our show, ten years after the Battle of July 28, 1488, Diccon, the sole surviving English archer from that fateful day, returns to Brittany. He must attend the second royal marriage of Anne of Brittany, Queen of France, to the Duke of Orléans (who becomes King Louis XII of France).

On his journey, Diccon encounters another witness to these tragic events, and their lively discussion brings their memories sharply back into focus. These memories unfold before our eyes, making us, in turn, witnesses to this history: the surrender of the Château de Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier in October 1487, the friendship between Duke Francis II of Brittany and Edward Woodville, Count of Scales, which sealed a military alliance with 440 English archers. Finally, the devastating battle at Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier, where 11,500 Breton soldiers with their English, German, Flemish, Gascon, Basque, and Castilian allies fought against 15,000 French soldiers, supported by Swiss, Neapolitan, and Genoese mercenaries.

The fate of our young Duchess Anne, as well as that of Brittany, will be forever linked to this defeat that changed the course of history, our history…
